The Pocket Ranger also provides information about the local region from Taupo & Turangi to Tongariro, National Park Village and through to Ohakune, including accommodation, activities, transport, guiding and dining options as well as general information about the area.

Use the Pocket Ranger first as a research and planning tool for investigating the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the local area and secondly as a ‘ranger in your pocket’ when actually walking the Crossing – with essential info including weather and backcountry links and stories and videos about the points of interest along the track.

Anyone who has done the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can relate to marvelling at the sheer beauty and scale of the landscape, and wondering why the Red Crater is red, the Emerald Lakes are just so, and whether or not the ground is likely to erupt under your feet. The Pocket Ranger is a way to add value to the experience of walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing by interpreting the landscape and its stories, but in a manner which doesn’t leave any visual impact. Project Tongariro, a local non profit community group with strong conservation values has partnered with the Department of Conservation to develop the Pocket Ranger and hopes that along with providing an amazing tool for visitors to the region, they also gain profile and generate income so they can continue to sustain the natural heritage, history, education and recreation projects they undertake in Tongariro National Park.

Thank you for helping Project Tongariro to sustain conservation projects in Tongariro National Park, World Heritage Area, NZ.
