Download the Pocket Ranger for everything you need to know at your fingertips about the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand.

The Pocket Ranger provides:
Section by section essential information
Maps
Points of Interest
Interpretation stories
Video clips
Photo galleries
Important safety messages

The Pocket Ranger also provides information about the local region from Taupo & Turangi to Tongariro, National Park Village and through to Ohakune, including accommodation, activities, transport, guiding and dining options as well as general information about the area.

Use the Pocket Ranger first as a research and planning tool for investigating the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and the local area and secondly as a ‘ranger in your pocket’ when actually walking the Crossing – with essential info including weather and backcountry links and stories and videos about the points of interest along the track.

Anyone who has done the Tongariro Alpine Crossing can relate to marvelling at the sheer beauty and scale of the landscape, and wondering why the Red Crater is red, the Emerald Lakes are just so, and whether or not the ground is likely to erupt under your feet. The Pocket Ranger is a way to add value to the experience of walking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing by interpreting the landscape and its stories, but in a manner which doesn’t leave any visual impact. Project Tongariro, a local non profit community group with strong conservation values has partnered with the Department of Conservation to develop the Pocket Ranger and hopes that along with providing an amazing tool for visitors to the region, they also gain profile and generate income so they can continue to sustain the natural heritage, history, education and recreation projects they undertake in Tongariro National Park.

Thank you for helping Project Tongariro to sustain conservation projects in Tongariro National Park, World Heritage Area, NZ.

Latest reviews of Pocket Ranger app for iPhone and iPad

Did not load past the title image
I experienced the same buggies as cloud boy (read review below). I have tried reinstalling the app multiple times and I have even left it open overnight to allow it ample opportunity to load but to no effect.
Not that useful
Installed after seeing a poster at my local Park. Took forever to download due to its large size after installed was useless because no data offered in my area even after Syncing in my area. Great if it worked where needed.
Just what I needed!
Worked great and gave simple information. Maps that I needed too. Visiting the park from the US so I didnt have a data plan so I just downloaded on hotel wifi and could use it on he hike. Definitely get it!
Big, but beautiful app
Although 145mb is pretty large for so specialized an app (it takes a while to load initially) , this app is a fabulous guide to the TAC. Im planning to do the hike in November, and this app has gotten me more prepared for it than Ive ever been when headed out in unfamiliar territory. My only critiques are that the map is not as high a quality topo map as Id like, and Id love to have videos of all section rather than just some of them, although of course that would increase the size of the app even more.
It never loaded
I tried opening this app before leaving for my trip to NZ. The app loaded to a graphic image of a mountain and never did more than that. It stayed frozen for 30 minutes so I’m assuming it’s buggy. I’d expect a progress bar if it were actually doing anything.
